PRESTUDY: 〜oますmasu

What Do You Eat, Drink, Read?

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
In this lesson, you will learn how to:
Pattern A: [noun]o [verb]ますmasu — say what you do, ask, and say what you don't
Pattern B: [noun]o [verb]ませんかmasenka? — invite someone ("Shall we…?")

THE BIG IDEA: o MARKS THE THING

English Explanation

In English we say "I eat rice." The word rice is the thing we are acting on.

In Japanese, you mark that thing with the particle o (pronounced "o").

ごはんgohanoたべますtabemasu。 — I eat rice.

コーヒーkōhīoのみますnomimasu。 — I drink coffee.

🍚
ごはんgohano
the thing
😋
たべますtabemasu
the action
Quick Rule

Put the thing first, then o, then the verb.

Japanese verbs come at the end of the sentence.

PATTERN A: 〜oますmasu

I do / Do you…? / I don't

Pattern: [noun]o [verb]ますmasu

Three endings, one pattern

ますmasu — I do it (positive)

ますかmasuka — Do you…? (question — just add ka)

ませんmasen — I don't (negative)

EXAMPLES

ごはんgohanoたべますtabemasu
I eat rice.

コーヒーkōhīoのみますnomimasuka
Do you drink coffee?

テレビterebioみませんmimasen
I don't watch TV.

ほんhonoよみますyomimasuka

PATTERN B: 〜ませんかmasenka

Shall we…? / Would you like…?

How to use

You already know ませんmasen means "I don't…" (from Pattern A).

When you add ka to the end, it becomes a friendly invitation — like "Shall we…?" or "Would you like to…?"

Same ending, but a totally different feeling — it's a warm offer, not a "no"!

COMPARE: 〜ませんmasen vs 〜ませんかmasenka

ませんmasen (negative) ませんかmasenka? (invitation)
コーヒーkōhīoのみませんnomimasen
I don't drink coffee.
