Is There...? — There is / There are

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
In this lesson, you will learn how to:
• Say that something exists at a place
• Use ありますarimasu for things and いますimasu for people/animals
• Ask "Is there a ___?" questions

THE BIG IDEA: ありますarimasu vs いますimasu

English Explanation

In English we say "there is / there are" for everything — a book, a cat, a friend, a desk.

In Japanese, there are two versions depending on whether the thing is alive or not:

ありますarimasu — for THINGS (books, pens, desks, TVs...)

いますimasu — for LIVING things (people, animals)

📚
for things
vs
🐱
いますimasu
for living things
Quick Rule

If it can move on its ownいますimasu

If it just sits thereありますarimasu

"There is a [thing] at [place]."

Pattern: [place]ni [thing]gaありますarimasu

How to use

Start with the place, then add ni (at / in / on).

Then say the thing, add ga, and finish with ありますarimasu.

ni = at/in/on (marks the location)   ga = marks what exists

EXAMPLES

There is a TV in the room.

There is a book at home.
